someone actually sells a clock with a pen taped to the little hand.
Is this as sad as I think it is, or am I just having a strange day?

It's as sad as you think it is. I saw these last week on some website and my question was this:
So you have to move the clock every hour, right? What's the point? I mean, isn't that a bit annoying? And how do you know when it's done? Do you just have to sit and watch it? Or is there an alarm option of some kind so that you don't waste precious cirle drawing time by having it go over an area it's already written on?
Build one that will gradually make smaller and smaller circles or, better yet, will relocate itself to another position on the wall.
That would be cool.

This reminds me of the circular glass cutters you always see in movies during ultra-tech break-ins and robberies.
Forget the pen...slap a glass cutter on the end of that sucker!!
